  • 48 more ‘wellness hubs’ to promote healthy lifestyles

The health ministry is to set up 48 more wellness hub community centres across the country to help promote a healthy lifestyle among the people, health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said.

He said 33 such hubs have been established since 2020 in urban and rural areas and the remaining 48 hubs are expected to be completed by 2033, Bernama reported.

“While hospitals and clinics play a crucial role, I regard wellness bubs as the cornerstone of healthcare, particularly in urban and rural areas, offering substantial support for people’s health,” he said at the opening of a wellness hub in Kuala Langat, Selangor.

A new facility will be launched in Kuala Selangor later this year, the fourth in the state, after Hulu Langat, Sabak Bernam and Kuala Langat.

Dzulkefly said the centres had helped nearly 1.5 million Malaysians, of whom 75% had successfully lost weight, 74% improved their physical fitness, and 54% quit smoking.

He said the wellness hubs, formerly known as community health promotion centres, have been upgraded into community centres that offer health and wellness services, focussing on behavioural changes and promoting consistent, sustainable healthy lifestyles.

At today’s ceremony, the ministry entered a collaboration with the fire and rescue department on health and wellness initiatives, including activities at the Fire and Rescue Academy and fire stations.

Dzulkefly said more than 1,100 firefighters have taken part in activities at wellness hubs and most of them have successfully lost weight and become more fit.

  • George Clooney pulls from personal experience to play filmstar in ‘Jay Kelly’

The group, including his publicist Liz, played by Laura Dern, and hair and makeup artist Candy (Mortimer), slowly disintegrates along the journey. But Kelly’s loyal manager Ron, portrayed by Adam Sandler, stays by his side and takes stock of his own life.

“You see somebody who, when they make a movie, it takes a lot of time away from your family. I’ve always tried to bring family around as much as possible,” said Sandler. “And like anyone who works for a living, you’re away from some stuff you wish you weren’t missing. It’s dealing with that pain and finding out the best balance.”

  • Green fingers and thumbs (The language of gardening)

This week’s post relates to the language used to describe an activity that gives a great deal of pleasure to people the world over – growing and taking care of plants and flowers, whether outside or in the home.

Starting, appropriately enough, with seeds, when you put a seed in soil so that a new plant will grow, you sow or plant it, and when you put a plant in the ground or in a container of soil, you plant it:

There’s still time to sow carrots and beetroot.

Plant the seeds two centimetres apart.

We’ve planted an apple tree in the garden.

To pour water onto a plant or the ground is to water it, and if you pour too much water onto a plant or seed and cause problems for it, you overwaterit:

Water your roses early in the morning or late in the evening.

I’m afraid I’ve killed several houseplants by overwatering them.

weed is a wild plant that grows where it is not wanted, especially among flowers or grass in a garden. When we remove these plants from an area of the ground, we weed it or do the weeding:

The garden was neglected, and weeds were growing everywhere.

I’ve been weeding the area to the right of the path.

I really need to do some weeding before the rains start.

Moving on to cutting and removing parts of a plant, if you deadhead a plant, you remove old flowers from it. When you cut back a tree or plant, you make it smaller by cutting off parts of it, and when you prune a tree or plant, you do this especially in order to make it grow better in the future:

To encourage more flowering, deadhead the flowers as they fade.

That hedge is too tall and needs cutting back.

I watched a video on pruning roses.

If a plant grows and is healthy, you can say it does well or thrives:

The lavender is doing really well in the sunny border.

These plants thrive in the shade.

Finally, if plants usually grow well in your care, in UK English we say that you have green fingers or you are green-fingered. In US English we say you have a green thumb or are green-thumbed:

My grandmother had green fingers – her garden was so beautiful.

This is the perfect book for a green-thumbed friend.

Who do you know who has green fingers or thumbs? Let me know below!

  • I had never driven a van. Then I decided to live in one

Other than a shaky test drive in which I’ve never been more convinced that panel vans are built to exclusively accommodate male proportions, I had never driven a van, let alone used a jigsaw or a pocket hole jig or an angle grinder.

Because I could relate: it had been that very sense of envy that had inspired six months of research into Sprinters, Transits and Ducatos and led me, at long last, here.

  • This Family’s Home Has Stood for a Century — in Four Different Countries

Mr. Zigante, a 30-year-old engineer, takes a breath and lays out the family tree: His great-grandmother, Angela, was born in Austria-Hungary. His grandmother, Maria, 90, in Italy. His father, Aldo, 61, in Yugoslavia. And Alex was born and raised in Slovenia.

And yet, all of them have lived their lives here in Portorož, a seaside village in what is now southwestern Slovenia, where the family’s roots go back centuries to the Venetian Empire, and where their modest three-story home has been a fixed point on an ever-changing map.

  • The Ethics of Digital Environments

A more nuanced understanding of Human Well-Being Technology requires an engagement with the ethical dimensions of digital design. This includes a critical look at business models that rely on capturing and holding user attention, often at the expense of their well-being. The conversation shifts from “what can we build?” to “what should we build?” This ethical lens is central to the concept of Positive Computing, which argues that any obstacle to well-being in a technological system should be treated as a design error.

By integrating psychological principles into the design process, technology can become a tool for fostering resilience, empathy, and a deeper sense of purpose.

This approach also has significant implications for sustainability. A technology that supports well-being is one that encourages mindfulness, intentionality, and a connection to the world beyond the screen. These are the same psychological capacities that are essential for sustainable living. A person who is more mindful is more likely to be aware of their consumptionMeaning → Consumption refers to the use of goods and services, with a sustainable focus on mindful, responsible, and circular patterns.  patterns.

A person who feels a strong sense of connection to their community and environment is more likely to act in ways that protect them. In this way, Human Well-Being Technology is not just about individual happiness; it is about fostering the psychological foundations for a more sustainable and just society.
