Well-Being Technology

Human Well-Being Technology refers to the conscious creation of tools, systems, and digital environments designed to support and enhance our mental, emotional, and social health. It is a field that asks how our devices and applications can move beyond simple productivity to actively contribute to a fulfilling life. This approach looks at technology through the lens of our psychological needs, aiming to build experiences that help us connect with ourselves and others in healthier ways.

At its foundation, this area of study and design distinguishes between two classic ideas of happiness. The first is hedonic well-being, which is the experience of pleasure, enjoyment, and the absence of discomfort. The second, deeper form is eudaimonic well-being, a concept that comes from Greek philosophy.

Eudaimonic well-being is about living a life of meaning and purpose; it is the feeling of personal growth, of realizing one’s potential, and of contributing to something larger than oneself. Human Well-Being Technology is particularly interested in fostering this second, more durable form of fulfillment
