  • Limp Bizkit founding bassist Sam Rivers dies at 48

The founding bassist of American nu metal band Limp Bizkit, Sam Rivers, has died, the band announced on Saturday. He was 48.

“Today we lost our brother. Our bandmate. Our heartbeat,” read a statement on Instagram attributed to band members Fred Durst, Wes Borland, John Otto and DJ Lethal.

The statement did not specify a cause of death.

“Sam Rivers wasn’t just our bass player – he was pure magic… From the first note we ever played together, Sam brought a light and a rhythm that could never be replaced. His talent was effortless, his presence unforgettable, his heart enormous,” the band members wrote.

Limp Bizkit was formed by Rivers and Durst in 1994 and went on to release its debut album Three Dollar Bill, Y’all in 1997.

Building on their successful sophomore album, the band’s third outing Chocolate Starfish And The Hot Dog Flavored Water debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold more than a million copies in the first week of its 2000 release.

Rivers left the band in 2015 because he had “liver disease from excessive drinking”, he reportedly said in a book by rock writer Jon Wiederhorn.

Rivers rejoined Limp Bizkit in 2018 and featured in the band’s most recent release, the 2021 album Still Sucks.

  • Ceylonese Deepavali favourites: What do Sri Lankan Tamils indulge in during the festival?

Sri Lankan cuisine is both rich and varied and offers a peek into the culinary culture that underpins the food.

In Malaysia, Sri Lankan food is typically representative of Sri Lankan Tamils, who form the large majority of Ceylonese people who migrated to Malaysia between the 1880s and 1940s and whose lineage now continues through their descendants.

Most Sri Lankan Tamils in Malaysia originate from Jaffna and were drawn to Malaya in a bid to expand their economic opportunities. According to an article in sangam.org, a 1931 census showed over 18,000 Sri Lankan migrants in then-Malaya, with these numbers growing to 22,000 after the culmination of World War II.

As the population swelled in Malaysia, so too did the expansion of the community’s culinary culture, although the cuisine remained mostly confined to home kitchens as opposed to commercial establishments.

In recent years, Kuala Lumpur restaurants like Aliyaa, Yarl, Ceylon Flavours and Ceylon House have increasingly provided more representation for the community, as well as a glimpse into the food that is sacrosanct to many Sri Lankans.

  • Thieves hit the Louvre again – and other major museum heists

Thieves reportedly stole nine pieces from the jewellery collection of Napoleon and the Empress in the Louvre, using a basket lift to reach the museum on Sunday morning.

The daring heist at the world’s most visited museum occurred as tourists were inside the Galerie d’Apollon, where part of the French Crown Jewels are displayed.

The museum closed for the day as police sealed gates and ushered visitors out.

Here’s a look at some other famous heists worldwide:

The Louvre has a long history of thefts and attempted robberies. The most famous came in 1911, when the Mona Lisavanished from its frame, stolen by Vincenzo Peruggia, a former worker who hid inside the museum and walked out with the painting under his coat.

It was recovered two years later in Florence – an episode that helped make Leonardo da Vinci’s portrait the world’s best-known artwork.

  • Keep your dog in good health with a fitness routine

Before setting any new exercise goals, take your dog for a checkup with your veterinarian to evaluate their overall health.

Depending on the status of their health, you may be referred to a veterinary physical therapist or rehab professional to assess your dog’s overall muscle tone and fitness and develop the best kind of conditioning or rehab for your dog.

Not all fitness plans are suitable for certain dogs. Make sure the exercise goals you set are appropriate for your dog’s age and physical condition.

  • Retro restyled: Fashion revives vintage aesthetics with a modern, wearable edge

With so many fashion designers competing to turn countless ideas into exciting new creations, and with the constant pressure to win over fashion lovers everywhere, the world of fashion today is as challenging as it is captivating.

  • Sunny Side Up: Rest is what fuels the rest of our lives

I once interviewed a CEO of a local authority for an article and I was curious to know how she managed such a demanding job. I asked her if she had any advice, and was expecting a corporate response. Instead, she said, “Always use up all your annual leave, and make sure you take time to rest when you need it.”

I remember pressing her on that point, wanting to know how someone with her schedule and a busy family life manages to make space for rest. It turned out that this CEO practised what she preached, and encouraged her staff to do the same.

  • Singer Jay Chou seeking out magician friend over alleged dispute over money

Has Taiwanese singer Jay Chou fallen out with his good friend, Taiwanese-Canadian magician Will Tsai?

Chou, who completed his Carnival World Tour in Shanghai on Oct 11, alluded to the dispute in a post on Instagram Stories on Oct 15.

Posting a photo of Tsai with three question marks, Chou wrote in Chinese: “Has anyone seen this magician Will Tsai, who made himself disappear? Let me know.”

The Mandopop superstar continued: “This guy has been missing for a while, feeding me excuses which I actually bought, so that he could finish his performance. Do you think I am not a magician? If you don’t show up, you’re done.”

Tsai, who took part in reality show America’s Got Talent in 2017, posted on Instagram Stories about an hour later and wrote in English: “Sorry will stay off social for another bit. Expect temp void of response.”

Chou, 46, has since unfollowed Tsai, 41, on Instagram.

The two previously had a good relationship, with Tsai being a regular cast member of Chou’s travel variety show J-Style Trip (2020 to 2025). They also collaborated on a performance combining magic and Chou’s song Love Confession (2016) at China Central Television’s Spring Festival Gala in 2018.

  • Reversing carbon monoxide poisoning more quickly

A new engineered molecule shows promise as an antidote for carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning with fewer side effects than other remedies currently being tested.

This is according to research from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the United States.

“Carbon monoxide is the most common poison in America and in the world, and there’s no antidote for it,” said Dr Mark Gladwin, dean of the School of Medicine and principal investigator of the lab that produced the study.

“When people die in house fires, it’s usually due to carbon monoxide poisoning.”

It can also come from operating any kind of combustion in an enclosed space, including a grill, a diesel generator or an automobile.

The researchers published the findings about their engineered molecule, RcoM-HBD-CCC, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in August (2025).

  • Major publishers fight back against US book bans

Escalating attempts to remove works featuring themes such as LGBTQ lifestyles and race relations from US bookshelves are facing growing resistance from publishers and rights groups, a major topic at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany.

Spearheaded by right-wing conservative groups, there has been an explosion in efforts to get books that are viewed as overly progressive banned in US schools and public libraries in recent years.

In 2020 just under 300 titles faced “challenges” – demands to restrict access to them or remove them entirely – across the United States, according to the American Library Association (ALA).

That number began surging the following year, and reached over 9,000 in 2023, said the NGO, whose office for intellectual freedom has been tracking challenges since 1990.
