  • Ice cream trucks help police in the US build trust with the community

The puns are plentiful as police departments around the country buy their own ice-cream trucks and roll into neighbourhoods to hand out frozen treats for free.

“Copsicle Patrol” is written on the one in Danbury, Connecticut.

“Freeze! You have the right to remain frozen,” says another in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. “Let’s Chill Together,” Cleveland’s proclaims. “Frosty Five-O. Get the inside scoop” declares one in Palm Bay, Florida. “To Protect and Soft Serve,” says yet another in Toldedo, Ohio.

Whimsical slogans aside, a growing number of local law enforcement outfits are using the trucks for a serious mission: to have positive interactions with their communities at a time when headlines often feature police brutality and misconduct.

“There is no better way to draw the community to approach the police and let them know that we are approachable, we’re humans as well, than by handing out free ice-cream to the kids,” said Lt. Kyle Besse of the Norwich, Connecticut police department.

“The smiles on the kids’ faces are really what make you realise that this is a great community outreach service.”

  • Celebrating Malaysia’s rich biodiversity: 5 nature spots to check out

Besides having a rich culture and vibrant history, Malaysia also boasts amazing natural wonders. The country is one of the world’s 12 megadiverse destinations and is home to unique ecosystems and a wide range of wildlife.

Tourists can book trips to visit these natural sites including rainforests, rivers and islands from trusted travel agencies or via online travel platforms like redBus. This website allows you to easily book both ground transport and ferry services.

Here are five of nature spots around Malaysia to check out.

    1. Langkawi Rainforest Walking (Kedah)

Aside from white sandy beaches and gorgeous islands, Langkawi’s ancient rainforest is also worth exploring.

But don’t just climb any mountain or hill on your own. For a more immersive experience, take a guided tour, where you can learn all about the benefits of the endemic plants and how to spot tropical birds.

If you’re driving to Langkawi, you can board the RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) ferry from Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis.

    2. Gua Tempurung (Perak)

If you are up for more adventures, then head to Gua Tempurung, Peninsular Malaysia’s largest limestone cave, according to Tourism Perak.

For safety reasons, there are very limited sections that you can explore on your own, so join a guided tour instead.

As you stroll along the pathways, check out the beautiful limestone formations – stalactites and stalagmites – that adorn the cave’s interior.

Stretching 4.5km long, Gua Tempurung is also a treasure trove of mining artefacts left behind by tin miners from the past.

To get there, you need to make your way to Ipoh first, either via the Electric Train Service (ETS), bus or car. Gua Tempurung is 37km from the city.

    3. Zoo Negara (Selangor)

For those seeking a fun escape, visit the Zoo Negara in Ampang, Selangor, where there are over 4,000 animals residing.

At the Ape Centre, learn some interesting facts about primates like the chimpanzees and our orang utans. The Bird Aviary, meanwhile, has a diverse collection of bird species, some of which are classified as endangered.

More than just entertaining, the Zoo Negara is an educational experience for both children and adults.

There are public buses from Kuala Lumpur that can take you to the zoo. Alternatively, you can also take the LRT, or take an e-hailing service.

    4. Melaka Crocodile & Recreational Park (Melaka)

The historical state of Melaka is a popular weekend getaway destination. One of the many things you can do here is to visit the Crocodile and Recreational Park in Ayer Keroh.

The park, which has been around since the late 1980s, hosts over 100 species of these scaly reptiles, such as the African dwarf, Indian mugger and hunchback.

Besides crocodiles, there are also other attractions like a petting zoo and a water park. It’s also very near the Melaka Zoo.

There are many tour bus services that go to Melaka, but look for ones that specifically stop at Ayer Keroh instead.

    5. Klias River (Sabah)

If you’re in Sabah, go on a river cruise along the Klias River in Beaufort, 110km from the capital, Kota Kinabalu.

Along the way, you may just encounter the endemic proboscis monkey or the rare silver langur, among other animals.

After the sun sets, fireflies come out, leaving the place all lit up and twinkling.

To reach Beaufort, you can take the train (about two hours) or bus from Kota Kinabalu. You can book a guided tour from the town to explore the Klias wetlands.

  • Senior citizens: To operate or not to operate?

As Malaysia prepares to become an ageing nation by 2030, questions surrounding elderly healthcare are becoming increasingly urgent.

This demographic shift places greater emphasis on healthcare decisions that affect the quality of life in later years, with one of the most challenging questions many families face being: to operate or not to operate?

Surgery can be a lifesaving and life-changing option.

Yet, many older patients are denied the option of surgery because of perceived notions based solely on age.

“About half of people over the age of 65 will require surgery at least once in their lives,” says consultant geriatrician and internal medicine physician Dr Chin Ai-Vyrn.

The most common causes are fractures from falls, head injuries and cancer.

However, the decision to proceed with surgery is rarely straightforward.

“It is not a one-size-fits-all situation.

“We assess frailty, physical and mental health, the patient’s priorities, and the level of support they will receive after surgery.

  • HK actress Lynn Hung gracefully responds to news of ex Aaron Kwok expecting 3rd child

Hong Kong actress Lynn Hung recently attended a beauty salon’s anniversary celebration in Causeway Bay, where she answered questions about her personal life.

In an interview, Hung, who famously dated superstar Aaron Kwok from 2006 to 2013, said she’s aware that her ex-lover is expecting a third child with his wife, Chinese model Moka Fang.

Kwok and Fang, who married in 2017, have two other daughters – Chantelle, eight, and Charlotte, six.

When asked if she would be sending her congratulations, Hung, 45, gracefully responded: “Since everyone’s already sending their blessings, I think I’ll pass.”

She then went on to reflect on her past tendency to splurge on luxury items, adding that she no longer indulges in such spending habits.

“When I open my closet at home, I can still find clothes which I bought over 10 years ago. Some still have the tags on because I never wore them,” she said.

Hung, who married businessman Ken Kwok in 2016, added that she used to shop frequently as a way to reward herself back when she lived alone.

But with two daughters now in her life, she prioritises buying things for them over herself.

  • HK-based singer Law Kar-ying celebrates 79th birthday with wife Liza Wang

Cantonese opera performer and actor Law Kar-ying recently celebrated his 79th birthday with a cosy, belated gathering attended by his wife, Hong Kong diva Liza Wang, and a few close friends.

On Oct 12, Wang shared four photos from the celebration – including one where she affectionately kissed Law on the cheek and another showing the couple smiling warmly in front of a green birthday cake.

The 78-year-old simply captioned her Instagram post: “Happy birthday, Kar-ying! Wishing you good health and all the best!”

Despite being diagnosed with cancer for the fourth time earlier in May, Law – who officially turned 79 on Sept 22 – looked healthy, radiant and in high spirits in the recent pictures shared.

Reports also indicate that he has continued to work and go about his daily routine as usual.

For context, Law was first diagnosed with liver cancer in 2004 and had to undergo a liver removal surgery to save his life.

With Wang’s unwavering support, he stayed optimistic and ultimately overcame the illness. The couple later tied the knot in the United States in 2009.

In 2014, a routine medical checkup revealed a 2cm tumour in Law’s liver. He was also diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2019.

  • Singer Jay Chou opens up about suffering from panic attacks during his Carnival World Tour

In concert, Jay Chou is seen as a glittering superstar shining before tens of thousands of adoring fans.

But the Taiwanese Mandopop singer recently revealed he suffered from panic attacks which prevented him from going on stage.

In an Instagram post on Oct 12 marking the end of his Carnival World Tour, which ran from 2019 to 2025, the 46-year-old wrote: “During the tour, there were actually some things I couldn’t control, like panic attacks that (almost) prevented me from going on stage, when my voice was not in good condition, and when I was under a lot of pressure.”

He said he thought of cancelling some shows due to his condition, but eventually refrained from doing so. He added: “Thinking about everyone who might have waited years for a concert… I could only push forward.”

Chou has not opened up about his panic attacks in the past, although he did wonder if a health scare he faced in 2022 was due to a panic attack or an issue with his heart.

Back then, he had uploaded on social media a photo of an intravenous drip in his arm, with the caption revealing he had “breathing problems and numbness of the arm”. However, it seemed to be a one-time incident and the original post was subsequently deleted.

Chou reportedly once suffered from ankylosing spondylitis, a genetic arthritic condition that causes inflammation in the joints and ligaments in the spine. But this condition improved after his friend, Taiwanese personal trainer Will Liu, encouraged him to exercise more.
